Reliable Natural Cough Remedies

Popular wisdom has recommended various cough remedies. From the consumption of tablespoons of honey (with or without lemon or other ingredients) to fumes of eucalyptus, mint and more. Now, what are the most reliable proposals?

Although it is true that the most appropriate thing is to go to the doctor and consult with him which are the most recommended treatment options according to our case, if we want to try a natural remedy to relieve a specific discomfort (such as a cough) we can resort to following.

Cough

Coughing is a defense mechanism of the lung and bronchus. So, generally when we cough, we do it to eliminate what may be causing some kind of discomfort in the body. It thus helps to mobilize mucus naturally.

Now, when the cough becomes a nuisance that persists over time and also prevents us from resting at night or leading a normal life, it is necessary to take medication to control it. For this, it is necessary to go to the doctor.

Natural (and Reliable) Cough Remedies

Chamomile infusion

Chamomile is an herb that has anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties that can provide some help in case of coughing. For this reason, this herb has been included in the manufacture of cough syrups to provide nighttime relief.

Chamomile-Infusion

Thyme infusion

The herb thyme has an expectorant action that can help stimulate the elimination of accumulated phlegm and also relieve coughs.

Ginger and honey

Ginger is a medicinal plant with expectorant properties, therefore, its consumption is recommended when there is a productive cough. It can be used as an infusion or, freshly grated, with a tablespoon of honey.

Eucalyptus infusion

The leaves of the eucalyptus tree are said to act as an inhibitor of bronchial irritation, which is why it is recommended to use it when a dry cough occurs.  In addition, it gives off a fresh, minty smell that produces a feeling of general relief.

To consider

Note: rather than using the infusions as drinks to relieve coughs orally, it is advisable to breathe steam of hot water (herbs are optional, what is actually beneficial is the humidity, not the aroma of the herb as such or its compounds ).

While the infusion is brewing, you can stand near the cup, place a towel over your head, and take advantage of the moisture for relief.

Finally, there is a home remedy that is often highly recommended for cough relief and that is to place an onion by the bed. This remedy does work and, in fact, the more cut the onion is and the closer to the bed where it is going to rest, the better. The cut onion helps to create humidity in the environment and, therefore, provide relief.
