5 ways to disinfect your makeup brushes

Non-toxic makeup.

Next, we will explain some simple methods to remove the residue of these elements. Remember that you should preferably carry out this process after each use.

1. With isopropyl alcohol

It is, for sure, the best known method to carry out this task. It simply consists of applying some alcohol to the bristles of the brush and rinsing them. Then, rub the brush over a paper napkin and dry it with another napkin to absorb any moisture that may accumulate.

2. Use specific products

The cleaners that you get in any cosmetic store are, without a doubt, the most efficient option to disinfect your makeup brushes. Their main benefit is that they are quick-drying, so you can apply them after each use and store the accessory immediately afterwards.

Its mode of use is very simple: you must spray or pour some of the product on the brush and then pass it through a paper napkin drawing circles with it. With this procedure, you will make sure that the particles of dust, grease and other products remain adhered.

If you want to make your own brush cleaner, we recommend this recipe:

  • In a spray  bottle , add rubbing alcohol and distilled water (half a bottle of each).
  • Add a tablespoon of baby shampoo.
  • Also add half a tablespoon of hair conditioner.
  • Mix and apply to a paper towel to clean the bristles of the brush.

3. With facial cleanser

As well as helping to remove makeup from the face, the facial cleanser allows you to remove the remains of these products from the brushes. The procedure in this case varies a bit from the previous tricks.

First, you will need to moisten the bristles with warm water. In a small bowl, mix some facial cleanser with water. Dip the bristles into this mixture and rub with your fingers to remove any dirt.

Afterward, rinse and let them dry vertically for a few hours. You can also dry with a napkin, as we mentioned before.

4. Use olive oil

Did you know that this healthy cooking ingredient can help you disinfect your makeup brushes? One of its advantages is that it is an element that we all have; in addition, its use is very simple.

Dip the tip of the brush in a bowl of olive oil, then rub it in a circular motion on a paper napkin, as previously explained. This way, dirt and oil residues will be absorbed by the paper and your makeup brush will be ready to use again.

5. Washing

Homemade makeup powders.

About once a month, you should wash your brush to remove accumulated dirt. To do this, you can buy specific soaps that are used to clean cosmetics or, instead, use a dishwasher or dish soap. Remember that you must remove grease and bacteria, so shampoo is not the best option in this case.

First, you have to moisten the bristles of the brush. Afterward, apply some soap and scrape the brush against a rough surface. In general, specific soaps have a surface in the container for such purposes.

Subsequently, it remains only to rinse the bristles in the sink. An important precaution: try not to get the wood of the handle or the ferrule of the brush wet, as they could swell from the humidity and spoil.

Finally, you better not use a towel to dry it. It is convenient to leave it on a paper napkin that absorbs the drops that fall from the bristles.

Lastly, it is worth clarifying that not all brushes can continue to be disinfected and reused. If you see that it is very hard or if, directly, it already has a knot at the end, it will be better to discard it and make way for a new one.
